This model convinced us with features usually available in more expensive devices. Compatible with a large number of connected objects, it works for preventive and safe driving.

Mounted on a suction cup system, its bright 5-inch screen offers great readability. This model also presents an optimal signal reception since the data calculation is fast and precise. If it can be powered from a USB cable or from the cigarette lighter, you still benefit from an autonomy of 1 hour which gives you time to enjoy the Gamin DriveSmart system, to consult the addresses of restaurants closest and use the Smartphone Link application.

This model benefits from a night mode and, above all, an integrated SIM card that informs you in real time on traffic conditions. Thus, you save time by avoiding potential obstacles

If its 6-inch screen is sensitive to fingerprints, it compensates with its resolution of 800 x 480 pixels as well as its night mode. While this device offers a battery life of 1 hour, it can be powered by USB cable or from the cigarette lighter in your car. Mounted on a magnetic suction cup mount, it benefits from the integrated Wi-Fi option and is compatible with Siri and Google Assistant. Better yet, it displays an integrated SIM card system.

This very design device has the largest screen of this selection, for optimal visibility, which makes it a more than ideal GPS for large vehicles such as 4 × 4, vans and even trucks.

With its 6.95 inches, it displays the largest screen of this selection. If the latter does not have a proper framework, it remains fluid and responsive. Maintained thanks to the suction cup system, this GPS is powered by USB cable and / or by a cigarette lighter connection, unfortunately often considered too short by users. It is ideal for large vehicles and combines functions ranging from “simple” traffic information to Bluetooth connection and danger detection. On the other hand, strangely, it comes without instructions.

How did we make our choice?

Nowadays, there are many smartphone applications that allow you to access traffic information and follow a route, as long as you have a good car phone holder . However, despite this competition, GPS still offers some advantages such as screen readability, network reliability or even the non-consumption of mobile data.

To navigate among the multitude of models that flood the market, we have established a list of criteria to consult before making your choice:

  • The support : often ignored, it is however an element which greatly influences the comfort of use of the product. Thus, make sure that the suction cup mount of your GPS allows you to install it comfortably wherever you want. The fixing system or the foot (mobile or not) are also important.
  • Size: Regular size is 5 inches. While a larger screen offers better visibility, it should also not take up too much space in relation to the dashboard. This is why it is better to use large screens for large vehicles. Responsiveness and resolution will determine its quality, while brightness must ensure good readability while preserving your eyes, day or night. An anti-reflective panel is also necessary but it must not catch fingerprints.
  • Signal reception : your position is determined by satellites which retrace your route in the event that you deviate from the route defined at the start. Therefore, favor more chips of the SiRF Star III type (more reliable) and SiR Instant Fix II technology for better positioning reactivity.
  • Power supply : if most GPS devices are equipped with a long-lasting battery, they must still be recharged after a certain time. This is the reason why you should ensure that your device comes with power supply via USB, cigarette lighter or both. A mains charger can also be interesting, but it is rarer.
  • Lifetime Maps : GPS without good maps is useless GPS. Indeed, it must stay up to date if you want it to show you the routes correctly. Free map updates are now commonplace, but it’s best to check availability before making your choice.
  • Connected services : they allow you to obtain a lot of useful information, such as online addresses, points of interest to visit during your trip and other traffic information. At this level, TomTom’s HD Traffic remains the service with the best reputation, but the competition has made huge strides in this area. Please note, these services are not always free!
  • The functionalities : among the most popular, we find the hands-free function. It thus gives the indications orally to the GPS, which is equipped with voice recognition. In addition, the majority of devices integrate the possibility of placing “points of interest”, such as restaurants, hotels, shops, tourist places or, simply, gas stations.

Anxious to present you with quality models, we have deliberately excluded from this selection the GPS which are sold by unreliable labels, even if they display unbeatable prices. This choice also explains the lack of diversity in terms of the brands offered to you here.

After eliminating devices unavailable on the European market, we consulted the various user and expert opinions to reduce our selection margin from ten models to what we believe to be the 4 best car GPS devices.

This model convinced us with features usually available in more expensive devices. Compatible with a large number of connected objects, it works for preventive and safe driving.

This device has a bright screen and optimal signal reception. With efficient battery life, it can still be powered in two different ways, so you can benefit from its great connectivity at all times.

If the American brand Garmin also stands out in the field of GPS watches , it is especially known for manufacturing car GPS.

The suction cup model it offers us here is topped with a 5-inch touch screen, offering an intuitive grip and an easy voice guidance system.

Its power is felt both in terms of signal reception and in terms of battery life. In fact, not only are the calculations of geographic data fast, but the device can take about 1 hour without being powered. If you are planning a longer trip, do not panic since USB cables and cigarette lighter are available for connection to the mains.

This GPS covers no less than 46 countries, whose maps you can easily update. To do this, either you connect the device to a computer via the USB cable, or you use the integrated Wi-Fi system.

In addition to its compatibility with connected watches and Garmin reversing cameras, this model is compatible with smartphones.

Thus, once the Smartphone Link application has been configured, you will receive customizable notifications and benefit from the recalculation of quick routes, viewing weather forecasts, reading SMS, calls in hands-free kit mode or even calendar reminders. Unfortunately, the radar service is chargeable, although the manufacturer is vague about this.

Among the more “classic” functions, the Garmin DriveSmart system includes the traffic information service – which is an excellent way to avoid traffic jams – and provides information on the availability of nearby public car parks.

In addition, it prevents dangerous turns, changes of speed zones, animal crossings or even level crossings. If you drive in the wrong direction or if you approach school zones, it will also alert you.

In case of long trips, it sends you fatigue warnings, while suggesting that you stop at the next rest area.

Finally, the integration of TripAdvisor gives you the best addresses for hotels, restaurants or tourist places to visit in the surrounding area. And if you need to join your friends somewhere, the LiveTrack feature enables location sharing.

In addition to presenting a touch screen and connected functions, this device is characterized by a guidance mode in 2D and, above all, in 3D, to help you move more easily in space.

It is towards the competition that we are turning this time, with a model which is difficult (but not impossible) to find faults. Indeed, TomTom has demonstrated the quality of its GPS products for many years now, and this is still the case with this model with unwavering signal reception and powerful autonomy. While it benefits from great connectivity, it displays compatibilities worthy of the high end.

Physically, it consists of a bright 5-inch touchscreen with an adjustable and easy-to-install magnetic mount.

In addition to offering a fast route calculation, it is not subject to recurring signal loss and has an autonomy of 1 hour when not plugged into the mains. Real good point, you have guidance modes in 2D as well as in 3D, to help you move more easily in space.

Its “world” mapping can be easily and free of charge updated thanks to the integrated Wi-Fi. The only downside is that they take up a lot of space on the internal memory of 16 GB. As such, we recommend that you add an SD card to it.

You manage your content through the intuitive TomTom MyDrive Connect app. It offers Live services that prevent traffic jams and roadworks, warn you of speed cameras and remind you of speed limits. A noise also alerts you to any danger zones. In addition, the MyPlaces function saves your addresses and finds your possible destinations.

Equipped with a Bluetooth connection, a speakerphone and a microphone, this device allows you to make hands-free calls and have SMS read aloud. It also features compatibility with Siri voice control computer app and Google Now smart personal assistant.

Here is therefore a very reliable GPS that offers great connectivity options with performance marked by its many features. Take your calls, avoid traffic jams, choose your own display and only worry about driving safely because this GPS does the rest!

This model benefits from a night mode and, above all, an integrated SIM card that informs you in real time on traffic conditions. Thus, you save time by avoiding potential obstacles.

In addition to the different display modes, this GPS lets you choose between enjoying an efficient battery life or a mains power supply. Mounted on the most resistant support, it includes a number of connected services and features that justify the price.

This model attached to a magnetic suction cup system has a 6-inch touch screen that displays a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and a night mode limiting the brightness in the dark. It is, however, very sensitive to fingerprints as well as glare.

The least we can say is that its signal reception is fast since it takes less than 20 seconds to calculate a long trip.

During your travels, you benefit from a battery life of about 1 hour but you can also connect the device to the mains via USB or from your cigarette lighter, even if users claim that the power supply is not easily accessible when the device placed.

Free updates of the 46 maps of European countries are possible thanks to the integrated Wi-Fi, so you no longer have to go through your computer. However, as with the previous model, the 16 GB of internal memory can quickly be used, the addition of a micro SD card is therefore welcome.

Unsurprisingly, this GPS gives you access to information relating to danger zones, road traffic, the presence of speed cameras or even that of the nearest car parks and service stations. Best of all, the integrated SIM card gives you real-time alerts, so you can adapt to road conditions.

To optimize your time, it memorizes your driving habits. So not only does it give you the shortest routes, but it also lets you plan your trips in advance.

Like its counterpart, it has a Bluetooth connection, voice control and a hands-free kit function, so you can listen to and / or dictate your messages orally.

Finally, it is also compatible with Siri and Google Assistant, which are accessible from a button placed on the screen.

We will conclude by saying that the TomTom Go 6200 enjoys exemplary performance. If its screen can be improved, its features are no less appreciable.

This very design device has the largest screen of this selection, for optimal visibility, which makes it a more than ideal GPS for large vehicles such as 4 × 4, vans and even trucks.

It displays the largest screen of this selection. If the latter does not include a framework as such, it is nonetheless efficient. Ideal for large vehicles, it has a convincing range and combines the simplest functions, as well as the most advanced.

This suction cup model features a 6.95 inch borderless screen that is readable, easy to use and more designed for vehicles such as trucks, vans and 4 × 4. Fluid and responsive, it has a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels as well as an intuitive menu.

While the signal is fast and efficient, users have encountered two power-related issues. On the one hand, it is difficult to access the location of the branch, on the other hand the cigarette lighter cable is slightly too short. Fortunately, you can count on a battery life of 1 hour to partially remedy these small inconveniences.

Also note that in addition to being marked by the absence of instructions for use, the first start-up of this device generally takes between 5 and 12 hours, which is quite significant.

This GPS covers 46 maps of European countries, the updates of which remain free and accessible via the built-in Wi-Fi or by connecting to your computer using the USB cable.

Obviously, it benefits from a traffic information system with detection of danger zones as well as an alert system that warns you of unexpected obstacles such as a level crossing, a cattle crossing, a school zone or a sharp bend.

It also keeps you from going around in circles for hours on end by showing you free parking spaces in real time.

While its Bluetooth connection gives you the option of switching to hands-free mode, the reception of notifications informs you of messages or calls without you having to look away from the road.

Finally, access to TripAdvisor makes your life easier during your multiple trips, offering you the best in hotels, restaurants and even tourist sites.

In the end, even if it does not bring a lot of elements in addition to the entry-level GPS, its screen width and its hands-free mode are most appreciable. While updates take a bit of time, the presence of built-in Wi-Fi greatly facilitates this aspect. So you can make reliable trips without wasting time.

Conclusion:-

Garmin Drive 50 LM SE Plus : Thanks to its 5-inch backlit screen, this GPS displays optimal readability. Powered by a USB port, it enjoys fast reception that takes less than 20 seconds to (re) calculate the route. In addition to being equipped with a suction cup mount, it offers an array of features that include the Garmin Driver alert system, the Garmin Directions fictitious guide as well as a simplified navigation system. We just preferred the Garmin DriveSmart 51 LMT-S to him.

TomTom Start 25 M : with a 5-inch screen, it attaches to a suction cup and offers you a quick route calculation thanks to IQ Routes technology. It covers maps of 45 countries and informs you about speed limits as well as places of interest. Its menu is intuitive and its updates are free throughout its lifetime. However, there is no traffic information as standard, nor Bluetooth, and the screen lacks responsiveness.
